I grew up in Bareneed, Newfoundland and attended St. Marks School in Bareneed. I completed High School at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland. I then did my undergraduate education at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and graduated with a B. Sc. in Physical Geography. I completed my Masters at the University of Windsor in Ontario and later completed a Ph. D. at the University of Colorado, Boulder (Ph. D. advisor Prof. Roger Barry).
My first career was working as a marine climatologist in the offshore oil and gas industry and this was followed by a academic career that focused on historical marine climatology. This academic research included using ships’ logs and other historical documents to reconstruct past climate and sea ice conditions in northern seas. I published articles on this topic in various scholarly journals (see Publications) and taught courses in climatology at several universities. I then transitioned to a second career in information technology and subsequently spent fifteen years as the Director of Information Technology for a 500 store retail chain. During this period my focus was on management, operations, database development and business intelligence. I am now retired and this Web Site represents one of my current passions.
