Richard Newall

The Malone Collection in the Bodleian Library, Oxford University contains a handwritten journal described as:

A folio volume, 140 leaves, in contemporary vellum. 1645. Containing copies of letters and accounts, 1623-5, of Richard Newall, London merchant, trading with Newfoundland.

Richard Newall’s journal covered the years from 1623 to 1625.  The journal includes letters related to a voyage to Newfoundland in 1623,  a voyage to Ireland in 1624 and a voyage to the Low Countries (Holland) in the spring of 1625.  I recently published a paper on his 1623 voyage to Newfoundland  (see 1623 in sub-menu) and have just posted a paper on his 1624 voyage to this Site (see Ireland 1624).

There is no evidence that Richard settled in Newfoundland or is related to the Newells of “The Dock”, Nfld. but he was the earliest person with this family name group recorded in Nfld.
